Famous hamburg Figures Hans Hummel before FIFA 2006
Hummel, Hummel - Mors, Mors 100 times in Hamburg: following the example of bears and cows in Berlin and Zurich, there are now 100 figures of Hamburg’s most famous water carrier, Hans Hummel, in the city centre. The and 240-kg-heavy figures made from glass-fibre-reinforced plastic are populating the area between the Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) and Alter Wall. The original Hamburg character is to serve as advertising for his home town in the form of a plastic. 43 banks, insurance companies, hotels and retailers from the Hanseatic city have provided sponsorship for the figure. Each figure was designed individually by an artist. “An enrichment of the city” says Henning Albers, boss of City Management, who is not only the author of the idea but is also sponsoring 15 of the figures. Even the Mayor, Ole von Beust, has committed himself by assuming patronage of the idea. However, the figures are intended not only to make the city centre more colourful and attractive for shoppers and tourists, but also at the same time to serve a good purpose. Hamburg Tourismus GmbH together with Caissa Touristik as well has provided sponsorship for a Hummel sculpture which can be admired in Fischertwiete, in the alleyway of Chilehaus. Hans Hummel‘s real name was actually Johann Wilhelm Bentz, an original Hamburger who was born in 1787, was resident in Große Drehbahn. 36, and who died in 1854. Hummel worked as a water carrier and was considered to be an ill-tempered type; which gave the children of the new town all the more reason to tease him by calling him by the derisive nickname "Hummel, Hummel!" (English: bumble bee). Because the tormented water carrier was seldom able to catch the little rogues - bearing in mind that he was always carrying great quantities of water for many kilometres into the town - he could only react with coarse replies of "Mors, Mors!", a Low German variation of the Götz quote, to be translated as “arses, arses!”
