Cordoba, Spain - 16 May 2015; no people in view. The Mosque-Cathedral of Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain, is a truly fascinating building with an eventful history. Originally a Visigoth Catholic Church, it was divided into Muslim and Christian halves when Muslims conquered Spain in 711, but shortly afterwards was completely converted into a mosque. Following the medieval Reconquista by the Christians, it was converted back into a Catholic Cathedral, with a magnificent renaissance nave planted incongruously in the centre of the mosque. Here we see, viewed from the exterior colonnade, a minaret that was transformed at the same time into a bell tower.
