It is to behoped that the ruling just issued by the special com-mittee on national defense of the American RailwayAssociation to give preferred movement to shipments ofcoal and iron ore will help in this emergency. This act and the proposed hori-zontal increase in freight rates will probably do moreto improve the steam railroad freight situation thanany of the many other remedies that have been pro-posed. So far the proposed freight rate increases havenot included coal, coke and iron ore. But it is notimprobable that in the early future the tariffs on thesecommodities will be considered for increase on the basisof so many cents per ton. The possibility of any newfactor which will increase the cost of fuel for publicutility use will create another cause of worry to elec-tric railway coal
