No. 32A SHEPHERDESS BY JEAN FRANCOIS MILLET No. 32 JEAN FRANCOIS MILLET FRENCH (1814-1875) A SHEPHERDESS An intimate study of the life of a young peasant girl, whose time fromdawn to dark is passed in watching sheep, who looks forward to nothingbetter, save, perhaps, to becoming the wife of some peasant and to exchangethe exclusion of the fields for that of a cottage. In the shadow of a clumpof bushes she sits, her staff resting on the stones beside her. She wears arough dress of coarse material, covered with a blue apron, and her hair is con-fined in a close-fitting red cap. With her hands folded in her lap, and herlips slightly parted, she appears to be lost in a day-dream, leaving the care ofher charges to her faithful dog, a rough, shaggy creature, who watches theflock from a slight eminence near at hand. Avery, Sr., No. 33 LANDSCAPE AND POOL BY JULES DUPRE No. 88 JULES DUPRE FRENCH (1812-1889) LANDSCAPE AND POOL A dark and gloomy pool of water stretches across the foreground of thepicture, alongside which runs a narrow path, leading in the middle distanceto a white-walled cottage with roof of thatch. Overshadowing the tinybuilding is a tall clump of trees, stretching across the picture and cutting offall further view, with the exception of a patch of distant meadow land, illu-mined by a staccato effect of sunshine. The sky is a deep blue, coveredwith heavy, rolling clouds extending to the horizon. The mirror-likewaters of the pool reflect the dark masses of the trees, the gray of the cloud-covered sky, and the white apron of an old woman, who wends her wayalong the path towards the cottage.
