Grassmoor, Crummock Water and Mellbreak, Lake District
With the early spring weather holding out I made a trip up to the north western fells. Grisedale pike had long been on the agenda. A large, pyramidal peak it towers over the village of Braithwaite. A steep ascent in the sunshine lead to its summit. From there the shapely peak of Hopegill Head lured me further west. On again to the top of Whiteside the sun was starting to drop and the light was steadily improving. From the summit of Whiteside the view across the steep valley of Gasgale to Grassmoor is magnificent. Its huge rounded bulk is punctuated by patches of scree and heather, with countless streams carving folds into its flanks. In this image the very last of the winter snow lingers in the north facing gullies. Down in the bottom of the valley sits Crummock Water, and behind the prominent shadow of Mellbreak.
