This is probably accounted for by the stones and other earthy materialcarried from the shores and from the rapids in the river, by the ice which drifts toand fro in the estuary for a considerable portion of the month of November, andalso by similar material carried on cakes of ice during the breakup, much of whichfinds a natural lodgment on the shoals. A look at the banks of the river, strewnas they are with stones and dotted with piles of freshly dumped earth makes itapparent that great quantities of these materials are transported by the ice andfind their way to places where ice-shoves take place.
