Horace Benedict de Saussure (1740-1799 ) is often called the father of modern alpinism. Jacques Balmat (1762-1834) mountaineer, a Savoyard mountain guide completed first ascent of Mont Blanc with Michel-Gabriel Paccard in 1786.
