During this time he was fourterms in the lower house of the Kansaslegislature, twice as speaker, and oneterm as state senator. In these offices hewas an active and successful promoter oflocal and general interests. He servedover two terms as postmaster at Emporiaand resigned. Graham came to Einporia inthe spring of 1S70, from Erie, Pennsyl-vania, where he had for some four yearsprevious been engaged in newspaper bus-iness, first, as city editor of the EricDaily Dispatc/i, and then as editor andpublisher of the Eric Gazette, the paperupon which Horace Greely served his ap-prenticeship before going to New \orkcity. He next began work in the otlice of the Emporia Neivs^ and soon purchaseda third interest, the new firm beingknown as Stotler, Rowland cV Graham,soon afterwards as Stotler ie 1S78 it started the Daily News andalso added a profitable real estate busi-ness. The News, daily and weekly, undertheir management, was a great after coming to Emporia Mr. Gra-ham agitated the starting of a buildingand loan association, then hardly heardof outside ot Philadelphia, and becamepresident of the first association of thatkind in the city, if not in the state.
