When the tissues are soft and small, as inscrapings, ideal sections are prepared by this method. For serialsections no other method can be employed. After thoroughlydehydrating the tissue the specimen is immersed in a solution of Fig. 22. The student microtome. This is intended for individual and laboratory use where areliable mechanical microtome at small cost is required. It is extremely simple, yet veryaccurate in construction. This is one of the few models which have Iemained practicallyunchanged, showing that it is adapted for its work. The stand is one solid piece of knife block is as heavy as is consistent with the size of the instrument. The feedarrangement is carried in a metal stirrup attached permanently to the front of thestand, and consists of an accurately cut micrometer screw having a pitch of mm., witha graduated head divided to 100 parts, each graduation, therefore, having a value of 5microns. The object clamp is adjustable in two planes, and can be set for paraffin orcelloidin cutting. zylol and paraffin, or in chloroform and paraffin, for from two totwenty-four hours, and is kept at a uniform temperature of 37° the specimen is immersed in m
