Collenchyma cells(J) are like the thin-walled cells of the pith, but are reenforcedat the angles, just as some packing boxes have strips of boardnailed fast on the inside of the box at the junctions of the fibers (7?) are extremely slender tubes with closed andpointed ends, much like a piece of thermometer tubing drawnto a point in a gas flame andthus closed. Collenchyma givesmoderate stiffness to the parts inwhich it occurs and is highlyelastic, so that it does not hinderthe growth of the stem which itincloses. Bast fibers are flexible but very tough, and thereforeenable the parts of the root,stem, or leaf in which they occurto resist being pulled apart.
