This is another of the principal families of Roxbury that,after being conspicuous for more than a century, has whollydied out here. From it have sprung the Connecticut Pier-ponts. John Pierpont. poet and clergyman, and Edwards Pierre-pont, minister to England. Sarah Pierpont. daughter of Rev. 326 pierpont. James and grand-daughter of John, became the wife of theeminent Jonathan Edwards. The only person of the name tothrow discredit upon it was an adopted son of Hannah, widowof Robert Pierpont, on whose petition to the General Courthis name was changed from John Murdock to Robert Pier-pont. The facts were these : —. PILLORY. Pierpont, the owner, and Storey, mas-ter of the brig Hannah, having procureda heavy insurance on their cargo for avoyage to the West Indies, the vessel wassunk in Boston Harbor, Nov. 22, 1S01, and alarge part of the insurance collected. Fraudbeing proved both as to the lading and lossof the brig, the court decreed that Pierpontand Storey be set in the pillory in StateStreet two several times, one hour eachtime, and imprisoned two years and paythe costs of prosecution. The sentence wasduly executed, the pillory being placed neari Change Avenue. This, it is believed, wasthe last time this punishment was ever in-flicted in Boston.
