But provided a man does not follow the example ofGounod (who transformed a Bach prelude into a modern, sentimental, andtrivial show-piece), of which I absolutely disapprove, but seeks to preservethe unities of style, there is surely no reason for raising an outcry over his 80 WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART desire to attempt a modernization as one way of showing his admirationfor an old master. Mozarts orchestral works, however, show ns that hehas colors fresh enough to captivate the ear to-day and probably for animmeasurable time to come.
