In the fall of 1805, Paul Henkel removed to New Market,and all hands were soon engaged in launching the discouraging the enterprise were sent to Dr. Solomonby Gruber, the famous printer of Hagerstown, Maryland,and Zentler, of Philadelphia, but the Henkels would not quitthe enterprise. In July, 1806, the press arrived, and a com-petent printer was engaged to start the work. The businesswas carried on in the name of Ambrose Henkel, who withhis brother, Dr. Solomon, were the responsible heads, al-though it was a family affair from the beginning. Theirhonored father and all the sons, with the exception of , entered the field of authorship, and thus all con-tributed more or less. Several of the sons were engraversand made their own illustrations. Of the latter, Andrewwas the most skillful, having learned the art in Philadel] Iriain 1809-10. Dr. Henkel was not only a benefactor in his professionallife, but made posterity his debtor for his far seeing interestin giving the world the complete works of the great Reform-er, Martin Luther, in an English dress. Not being able tocarry out his schemes, owing to his age and infirmities, hecharged his gifted sons to carry out his long cherished noble men constituted the new firm of Solomon & Brothers.
