Plant endophyte research. Scientist examining a fungal and bacterial endophyte isolated from a coffee (Coffea sp.) bean. This is part of research aimed to better understand fungal endophyte diversity in coffee. An endophyte is an endosymbiont, often a bacterium or fungus, that lives within a plant for at least part of its life without causing apparent disease. They have been found in all species of plants yet studied, but the relationship with their host is not well understood.
