The gateway of Tran Quoc Pagoda on an island in the West Lake, Hanoi, Vietnam

Trấn Quốc Pagoda, the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, is located on a small island near the southeastern shore of the West Lake. Founded in the sixth century during the reign of Emperor Lý Nam Đế, the temple was originally named Khai Quoc (National Founding) and was sited on the shores of the Red River, beyond the Yen Phu Dyke. Because of the river's encroachment, the temple was relocated in 1615 to Kim Ngu (Golden Fish) islet of Ho Tay (West Lake). A causeway links it to the road that crosses the lake.
