SMITH, Orson, president of theCache Stake of the son of BishopThomas X. Smith and Margaret Gour-ney, and was born July 4, 1853, in Iowa,while his parents were traveling to-ward Utah, having emigrated fromEngland that year. After arriving inthe valley, the family located in Farm-ington, Davis county, where Orsonwas partly raised, but they settled inLogan, Cache county, in 1860. Orsonwas ordained an Elder Sept. 13, 1868,and later sent to Iron county with aco-op sheepherd, on which trip he wasgone ten months. In 1875 he was calledto preside as Bishop in Paradise andmoved his family to that place inDecember, 1875. He acted as Bishopthere until May 17, 1883, when he was. chosen and sot apart as second coun-selor to Charles O. Card in the presi-dency of the Cache Stake of Zion. 1890, he was set apart by PresidentWilford Woodruff as president of theStake, which position he held until 1899. 3fORRELIj, Joseph, president ofthe Cache Stake of Zion, was born inLondon, England, Feb. 11, 1856, son ofThomas Merrill and Selina emigrated to Utah with his parentsand became a resident of Logan, Cachecounty; was baptized July 2, 1868, byFrederick W. Hurst, and subsequently ordained an Elder. In his youngeryears he worked on the farm, and inthe canyons, logging for saw mills,burning coal, working on brick yardsand doing almost anything which hecould find to do. His education wasvery limited. His father being sick
