Boniva osteoporosis drug. Molecular model of boniva (ibandronate sodium), a drug used to treat and prevent osteoporosis (brittle bone disease) in post-menopausal women. Atoms are represented as spheres and colour coded: carbon (green), hydrogen (white), oxygen (orange), nitrogen (blue) and phosphorus (yellow). The large blue sphere is a sodium ion. Boniva belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates. It inhibits the action of bone cells that degrade and reabsorb bone (osteoclasts), therefore slowing the loss of bone mass. It also increases bone mass. Boniva is taken in pill form once a month.
