In at least three instances, before the accident in which his lifewas sacrificed, Lieut. Brown escaped fatal consequences solely byhis remarkable skill as pilot. On one of these occasions his com-panion was killed. He had almost finished formation flying in theSeventh Class, when he was killed by a fall due to a defect in hismachine, on Sept. 28, 1918, while flying a Spad monoplace to thefront, in the Arrondissement de Mantes. He was buried at Harge-ville, Suresnes, France. When a boy he removed to WestRoxbury, Mass., where he attended the public schools. He grad-uated from the English High School, Boston, in 1906, as a Frank-lin Medal scholar, and entered Dartmouth College in the class of1910, graduating there magna cum laude. He was prominent inathletics, playing on the Varsity football team, where he was fa-mous as quarter-back; he also played baseball and hockey, andbelonged to the Theta Delta Chi Fraternity and the Casque andGauntlet Society; was member of Phi Beta Kappa; was permanentsecretary of his class. On leaving college he entered the wool busi-ness and later associated himself with an advertising firm, withwhich he was connected at the time of his entry into
