Josephus reckons up thehorses of Solomon as 20,000, and says thatthey were the most beautiful in their appear-ance and the most remarkable for their swift-ness that could anywhere be seen; and that,to preserve these qualities, they were kept inconstant and careful exercise. The riderswere in their appearance quite worthy oftheir horses. They were young men in thebeauty and flower of their age, and the tallestin stature that could be found in the undress was of Tyrian purple; and their long hair, which hung in loose tresses, [Modern Oriental Cavalier.].
