John Paul Jones visits Lady Selkirk after his men have taken her valuables.
John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was an American naval hero. He raided the shores of British Isles during the Revolutionary War. In 1778. on command of the frigate Ranger, Jones left France to harass British ships and ports. He aimed to take the Earl of Selkirk, but he was not at his manor. His men did take as booty the silver. When Jones heard how Lady Selkirk had comported himself in the face of the intruders, he felt remorse and late bought the stolen tea-pot when it came on the market and returned it to her, in person, so it is said - with the tea leaves still clinging to its interior. This illustration dates to 1894 and shows Jones and Lady Selkirk, and his band of men. The tea pot is on the table.
