Malta, arrived on the American coast tlie 1st of February,1837, bound to Boston. On that day, we got soundings inthe South Channel; wind south, with a warm, drenchingrain. The passage across the Atlantic had been pleasantfor the season; and we were now within a days sail ofour port, with a fair wind, and good prospects of a pleasanttermination to a voyage which had heretofore been remark-ably pleasant. Every stitch of canvass was spread to the breeze, and aheavy press carried on the vessel, in order to get to thenorthward of all the shoals, and into Boston Bay, before achange of wind. About 3, P. M., judging the vessel clearof the shoal ground, she was hauled up north-west for theback of Cape Cod, the lee studding-sails taken in, and boomsrigged in. At about 4, P. M., those well-known indicationsof a sudden change of wind to the north-west warned usthat our fair wind, and prospects of a speedy termination tothe voyage, were soon to be changed for a
