Th se consisted of two forts.()ne, named Fort Ontario, was built on the eastside of the river so as to command the other acrosstlie .stream. Itstood on ths west side of the river on the hillafterwards crossed hy VauBuren street, nearSixth street, and was sul)se(iuently known as theold French fort. It was a S(juare of 170 feet withbastions and ramparts of earth and masonrywhich, besides the ])arai)et, was twenty feet thickand twelve feet high; surrounded by a ditchfourteen feet « ide and ten feet dee)}, anil mountedeight cannon. The barracks were oajjable ofaccommodating 2011 men. Clark, the historian, says that it is sui)i);dthat there was another fort, all traces of whichhave been lost, and that it stood on the east says that when in 1818 the court liouse at EastOswego was erected ston(>was taken out of oldFort Ontario.
