Laser surgery. A surgeon's gloved hand holds a YAG/CO2 laser during a surgical procedure. It is a Yttrium-Aluminium-Garnet (YAG) and Carbon-dioxide (CO2) laser, used for specific applications in surgery. A hand-held laser is a modern alternative to the traditional cutting scalpel. It produces an intense beam of light of a particular wavelength. A low-energy laser beam might be used to coagulate bleeding around an ulcer, while a high-power beam can be focused to operate as a fine cutting instrument. Different lasers are used for removal of skin blemishes (tattoos & birthmarks), retinal surgery, and early treatment of cervical cancers.
