The Connecticut River with view of Gillette Castle State Park, East Haddam, CT seen from below. Gillette Castle, now a tourist attraction owned by the state since the 1940's, was built by William Hooker Gillette, a nineteenth century stage actor famous for playing Sherlock Holmes and originating the character's pipe and deerstalker hat. Gillette built the 24-room mansion, designed to resemble a medieval castle, after he retired in the early 1900's. Constructed with local fieldstone over a metal frame, it sits perched on a hill in a chain known as the Seven Sisters overlooking the Connecticut River and may be approached by car and/or ferry.
