Fowler's Toad (Bufo fowleri) in rock garden dining on an earthworm

a toad commonly found in areas of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Its range includes New Hampshire to eastern Texas, the midwest, from Michigan to the Atlantic coast and up to the Hudson into southern Ontario, along Lake Erie. Bufo fowleri prefers to live in open woodlands, sand prairies, meadows, and beaches. They burrow underground during hot, dry periods and in the wintertime. To defend themselves they have camouflage colors but they can also emit a noxious secretion that comes from the large warts on their backs. If attacked, this secretion will irritate the predator's mouth and, if ingested, can be poisonous to smaller mammals. If roughly handled, Bufo fowleri will also lie still on their backs and pretend to play dead.
