Illustration of yeast cells from Arcana naturae detecta by Dutch microscopist and microbiologist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723). Leeuwenhoek's pioneering work 'Arcana naturae detecta', published in 1695 was compiled of 92 letters written by Leeuwenhoek of his findings to members of the Royal Society.
