Y. Cavalry, knownas The Porter Guards, was stationed in Gettys-burg. From time to time Mrs. Wade and herdaughter repaired uniforms and sewed buttons onarmy coats for these soldiers. Both women werehighly respected by the New York men, veterans ofthe regiment living in Lockport, N. Y., at the presenttime recalling the fact that they were kindly and hospitable, lonesomeas the men were away from their homes. In fact, the daughterinvited and occasionally went to St. James Lutheran Church with oneor two of the visiting troopers.
