Hiatus hernia. Endoscope view of the inside of a hiatus hernia, the protrusion of part of the stomach into the thorax through the hole in the diaphragm (hiatus) that the oesophagus normally passes through. Hiatus hernias are extremely common and usually produce no symptoms. In severe cases they may cause gastrooesophageal reflux, resulting in heartburn.
