Owens Lake monitoring. Pollution controller taking readings from meteorological instruments being used to monitor the impact of dust storms at a salt lake. This is Owens Lake, a dry lake located in the eastern Sierra Nevada, California, USA. Once a lake, this area has now dried up due to diversion and use of water that once flowed here. Today it is a salt flat affected by alkali dust storms, where the alkaline deposits are swept up and blown into nearby areas, including towns, causing respiratory problems. This work is part of the local Air Pollution Control District (APCD) monitoring system used in California's districts.
