The Light of Navigation, 1620


Frontispiece from The Light of Navigation, 1620. Shows a nautical lesson with a shipping master surrounded by students working with maps, globes and all sorts navigational instruments. Flanked by Neptune and Aeolus, the gods of sea and wind. In the background a Dutch fleet sails in search of trade. At the top is the light of maritime navigation, radiant between sun and moon. Neptune was the Roman god of water and the sea in Roman mythology and religion. He is the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon. Aeolus is mentioned in the Odyssey as Keeper of the Winds who gives Odysseus a tightly closed bag full of the captured winds so he could sail easily home to Ithaca on the gentle West Wind.
