At that time, Pres-ident Jacksons attitude toward the United States bank so serious-ly affected values that wheat declined from |1,50 to 50 centsand Virginia farm land to leas than one-third of its former price. 33» This information was given by his grandson, Mr. B. These declines so affected the father*s obligations that BenjaminFranklin Harris and his brothers, each with a six horse team - inthose days without railroads - went into thewagoning or freight-ing business, and for three years wagoned freight over thatsection and out through Pennsylvania and as far west as Zanesville,Ohio, in order to recoupe the fathers losses. On March 30, 1833, the Virginia farm hekibeen sold at 40 ioof its original cost, and in a one-horse gig and a two-horsecarryall, the Harris family set out for Ohio, arriving at Spring-field on April 8, and nearby,purchased and settled upon theirnew farm. It was during this year that Benjamin Franklin Harriscommenced business for himself, buying and driving cattle over-land to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and there disposing of themto cattle feeders. In 1834, he started for Illinois via Danville, thenthrough the present site of Sidney, and Urbana - where there wasbut one cabin
