Thereis abundance of good sawing bush in thedistrict, and five steam saw-mills, whichannually turn out a large quantity of timber,a considerable portion being sent to Wel-lington and even to the Middle piles for buildings, and telegraph-poles of the same timber, are obtained inlarge quantities from the Wairarapa dis-trict. Flax is also manufactured, and woollargely grown, so that a very extensivecarrying trade is concerned in the convey-ance of these staple productions to Wel-lington, while large quantities of general. Beyond Greytown, the road lies for somelittle way through bush, but the rest of thecountry in the direction of Carterton andMastertou, the latter being eleven milesfrom Greytown, Ls open arable laud, a gooddeal of which is placed under crop. Thedescription of Greytown applies generallyto the township of Mastertou, except thatthe latter has less production of timber ;but on the other hand agriculture is moreextensively pursued. Carterton is a smallertownship situated between Greytown andMastertou. The trade and prosperity ofGreytown are in a great measure promotedby the custom of the stockowners andstation hiinds of the lower valley ; and inthe case of Masterton, the farmers of theOpaki phiin are found liberal buyers at thestores, while the Governm
