Building of the New England Mutual Life Insurance Company. is admirably constlueted. A fine marble staircase runs from the first to thesixth story. The building is furnished with numerous vaults and safes, thebasement alone having no less than ten safes for the accommodation of the Bos-ton Safe Deposit Company. The New England Mutual Life occupies the sec-ond story of its building. The Cathedral Building is a handsome iion structure on Winthrop Square,occupying the site of the ancient Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the scene ofthe labors of Bishop Cheverus, who was afterwards Cardinal-Archbishop of BOSTON ILLUSTRATED. 97
