Tropical cyclone Nargis. TERRA satellite image of tropical cyclone Nargis over the Bay of Bengal, on 1st May 2008. India is at top left, Burma is at right. At this point the cyclone was intensifying and had an eye (centre) measuring 19 kilometres in diameter. Nargis made landfall in Burma on 2nd May 2008, destroying thousands of buildings and causing widespread flooding. As of 6th May the death toll is at 22,000, with 41,000 people still missing. Nargis was the first cyclone of the 2008 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.
