In the fall of 1S90 when the subject of a choiceof a candidate for the Mayoralty was being agitated, a widely circu-lated journal offered a handsome prize to the man receiving themost votes, and the result demonstrated that Mr. Stuart was solargely the popular favorite that little remained for the nominatingconvention to do but select him as their standard bearer, and in thefollowing February he was elected by a larger majority than wasever before given a Mayoralty candidate in Philadelphia. On April1st he was inaugurated with imposing ceremony, and now the. errand boy of 1867 is the Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, andthe youngest man ever elected to that office. His course in theshort time he has occupied the chair of Chief Magistrate is such asto justify the prediction made for him by Col.
