Waste pickers collect things amidst heavy smoke from burning garbage, mostly plastic, textiles among other waste at Gioto Dumping site. An investigation by Kenyan nonprofit environmental group Clean-Up Kenya and Wild light for the Changing Markets Foundation found that European countries are dumping 37 million items of unusable plastic clothing in Kenya every year. The investigation found that more than one in three pieces of used clothing shipped to Kenya are of substandard quality and immediately the bails are opened, they become waste.
