Colonel W. H. Wallace was nominated by the Whigs,who held their convention at Olympia. There were severalcontestants for the nomination, but Wallace, who had onlyarrived in the territory that year, won it. He was a lawyerof no mean ability, and had held several places of trustand prominence in Iowa, the State from which he came toWashington. The campaign was conducted with the spirit naturallyto be looked for, following the activity with which it hadbeen begun. Lancaster was elected, receiving 698 votesto 500 cast for Wallace. Simmons, who ran independent,in spite of the fact that he had sought the nomination fromthe Democrats, received only 18 votes.
