This act was first passed the first of May, 1786, butnot being carried into speedy execution by the commission-ers, another act was passed the third of April, 1792, asfollows: That all the estate, right, title, interest, claim, anddemand of the people of the State of New York in and tothe said parsonage or glebe shall be and hereby are grantedto and vested in the Corporation of the Episcopal Church inthe Town of Yonkers, County of Westchester, and State of ST. JOHN S CHURCH. 31 New York, and their successors for ever, for the use of ST. JOHNS RECTORY AND GLEBE, 1809. During Mr. Pantons ministry the country was verymuch disturbed by the ravages of the American Revolution,and the parish, being alternately occupied by the Britishand American forces, felt the sad effects of the war. Thechurch was used at intervals by both armies as a hospitalduring the Revolution. The site of the original glebe is now centrally repre-sented by the combined areas of St. Johns and OaklandCemeteries. The site of this rectory and its outbuildingswas near the Sawmill River road. The rectory stood withinthe spot now occupied by the pretty grove of trees near theroad and directly opposite the large carpet factory of Alex-ander Smiths Sons. From the setting apart of the glebetill 1845 the church rectors lived upon it.
