When first discovered, the ironshutters prevented all ingress to the building until the fire hadreached a point beyond control; but the efficiency of the FireDepartment was shown by their success in confining the fire tothis single building and preventing its spreading. It is singularthat the risk upon this structure was at the time considered asextra favorable by the insurance companies on account of its isolatedsituation. During the year 1879 the whole loss by fire was $5,671, fires alone caused a loss of $3,665,076. The magnitude ofthese fires entitles them to more than passing Burning of St. Patricks Cathedral. A Blaze on Broadway and Grand Street. 245 At 9:32 p. m. on the 14th of January an alarm was received fromstation 167 at the central office for a fire which was discovered by apolice officer coming out of a fourth-story window of the CrosbyStreet end of the Grand Street front of the building known as thatof Brooks Bros., Nos. 462 to 468 Broadway, and having a front of100 feet on the east side of Broadway, 200 feet on the north side ofGrand Street, and 100 feet on the west side of Crosby Street, beingfive stories high. The Assistant Chief of Department was upon the ground withinthree minutes after the first alarm, and the third alarm sent outby him is recorded as received at 9:35 p. m. The condition ofthe fire upon the arrival of this officer was, that near the CrosbyStreet end of the Grand Street front, the building was so full of firethat a solid body of flame
