Uses of Centrifugal Fans.—Centrifugal fans are used almostexclusively for supplying air for the ventilation of buildings, forforced-blast heating, and for mechanical draft. They are alsoused as exhausters for removing the air from buildings whenthere is considerable resistance due to the small size or excessivelength of the discharge ducts and flues. The Disk Fan is similar in construction to the propeller of avessel and moves the air in lines parallel with its axis. It ismade with both flat and curved blades. Fig. 141 shows one ofthe latter with a direct-connected electric motor. This type of fan is light in construction, requires but littlepower at low speeds, and is easily erected. It is especially adaptedto exhaust ventilation when the resistance is small, being con- 192 HEATING AND VENTILATING PLANTS veniently placed in the attic or upper part of a building anddriven by an electric motor. Disk fans are largely used for the. Fig. 138. Fan with Three-quarter Housing.
