The Presidio Parkway, the connecting link between Golden GatePark and the U. S. Military Reservation known as the Presidio ofSan Francisco, consists of seven blocks of land which were acquiredat a cost of $360,000. The length of the boulevard is nearly onemile. Heattended the Horace Mann Schooluntil ten years of age and then con-tinued his studies at the SacredHeart College, which he left in 1888to become for four years an ap-prentice at the iron molding trade. From 1892 to 1907 the future FireCommissioner was employed as aniron molder. When the demandfor an eight-hour day was made hislong and practical experience in thetrade, together with his abilities inorganization work, were recognizedto the extent of his receiving the ap-pointment of financial secretary to the Iron Molders Union.
