Spain was the first claimant of territory bordering the southernMississippi, but failing to make settlements and improvements its titleseemed to lapse and France, by re-discovery and occupation, established 14 territorial rights and ownership. These were adhered to by France until1762, when, in a secret treaty, she ceded to Spain all her possessionswest of the Mississippi from its source to its mouth and west to theRocky mountains and beyond.
