The Eagle public house. Owned by Corpus Christi College since 1566 and presently managed by Greene King brewery
Owned by Corpus Christi College since 1566 and presently managed by Greene King brewery, there has been a public house on this Benet Street site since the 14th Century. The present incarnation of the pub is named The Eagle and it’s perhaps best known for its RAF bar. The ceiling of the room is covered in the graffiti of British and American aircrews from WWII, who recorded their names and squadron numbers using cigarette lighters, candles and lipstick. Now restored after being coated in decades of smoke and grime the inscriptions have been documented and form an important historical record. Interestingly, modern aviators have started to record details and attach squadron badges to the walls of the bar as well; thus providing an ongoing record of the military involvement with this famous Cambridge city landmark.
