This image may not be used in educational posters Chlamydia infection. Computer artwork of a cell (bottom) infected with Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. Elementary bodies (EBs), the non-replicating infectious form of the bacteria are seen both inside and outside the host cell. Each EB is surrounded by a cell envelope (green) covered in protein spikes (gold) that inject material into the host cells. Within the EB are ribosomes (red), the site of protein synthesis. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection that can go undetected causing infertility. It also causes the eye disease trachoma, which can lead to blindness.
