The Hedda Stone (or Monks' Stone), a Saxon tomb-shrine displayed in the Norman apse of Peterborough Cathedral (Benedictine Abbey of Medeshamstede), UK

The Hedda Stone (or Monks' Stone), a Saxon tomb-shrine displayed in the Norman apse of Peterborough Cathedral (formerly the Benedictine Abbey of Medeshamstede), England, UK. Carved c 780, the figures depict Christ (3rd from R) & the Blessed Virgin Mary flanked by four Apostles. In 870 Abbot Hedda, his monks & villagers seeking refuge in the church were murdered by Danish looters who sacked & burned the abbey. This tomb was placed over the grave of Hedda & his companion martyrs in the cemetery where it was visited as a shrine & the Mass said over it. The holes probably contained relics.
