SZCZECIN, Poland—With more than 24,000 troops from more than 24 nations pouring into Poland to meet the June 7 opening ceremony for Anakonda 16, military logisticians, transporters, and cargo specialists swarmed the largest port in the county to offload and stage more than 1000 pieces of cargo from ships over several days in May. Using a multitude of service members from every branch to receive and offload a ship is complicated to say the least. For three days, Army Reserve, Army National Guard and active component Soldiers from the 364th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), 483rd Quartermaster Company, 230th Sustainment Brigade and the 838th Transportation Battalion inspected, counted and documented cargo using both manual and automated data processing systems. While 838th Transportation Battalion Soldiers unload supplies and equipment from ships and dock, Army Reserve and Tennessee National Guard Soldiers operated winches, cranes and forklifts to move the equipment to nearby marshaling areas. “Our mission it to get the equipment off the ship as fast as possible,” said Lt. Col. Brad Culligan, Battalion Commander of the 838th Transportation Battalion headquartered in Kaiserslautern Germany. “We stage it for onward movement so the equipment can get to the units and help make Anakonda 16 successful,” he added. Exercise Anakonda 16 is a Polish-led, joint, multinational exercise taking place in Poland from June 7-17. The exercise involves more than 25,000 participants from more than 20 nations. Anakonda 16 is a premier training event for Army Europe and participating nations and demonstrates that the United States and partner nations can effectively unite together under a unified command while training on a contemporary scenario.
