False-colour scanning electron micrograph of hybridoma cells, producing a monoclonal antibody to cytoskeleton protein. Monoclonal antibodies are produced by injecting a mouse with an antigen & harvesting its antibody response by removing the B lymphocytes. These are fused with myeloma (tumour) cells taken from a mutant lymphocyte source. The fusion product is called a hybridoma cell. B lymphocytes are short-lived; when fused with tumour cells, which divide indefinetly, the continuous production of antibody is secured. Hybridomas are screened for the required antibody. Once isolated, it is cloned to produce one type only. Magnification: x1440 at 6x6cm size.
