Generally this spot will bedirectly under the middle of the stump, and it is sometimes neces-sary to bore into the tap root. Where a very big stump is rottenat the middle, but has several large branches, it is better to increasethe charge a little and locate it deeper in the ground or to place asmall charge under each of the large roots and explode them alltogether with a blasting machine. In order to keep the dynamite from splitting the stump, andwasting a part of the force which should be used in lifting it out, some blasters wind a stout chain around the stump several times. With some large stumps it is better to spread out the chargeunder them. This is done by boring holes from different sides sothat they will meet under the middle of the stump and charging eachhole with two or more cartridges. In this case it is necessary to primeonly one cartridge, but that should be loaded first and pushed back 30 nm^ ^ CLAY TAMPINGFUSI. ROTTEN STUMP CHARGE
