Inthe meantime the ice was steadily encroachingon the rudder. The Captain ordered all handsforward. From the ice they exerted theirunited strength against the port bow until theship began to glide slowly to starboard off theice-foot. The ice, which by this time hadclosed in around the rudder and propeller,was the source of much anxiety, and therewas great fear that the latter, while revolving,might be broken by striking the ice.
