Lorch led 1 before being promoted to Major and the position of Gruppenkommandeur of 1 in July 1942. He was killed on 19th August 1942 while holding the temporary position of Geschwaderkommodore following the loss of Oberstleutnant Peter Schemmel just five days before. Lorch was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 5th January 1943.
